Artistic Opportunity Grants
Information and Instructions

Artistic Opportunity Grants, available from the Warrensburg Friends of Music, are competitive grants, not to exceed $500.00, to support professional and artistic development and presentation opportunities for musical artists and groups.

Eligibility:
To be eligible for an Artistic Opportunity Grant, applicants must be:
1. An individual (18 years or older) or group with a musical focus
2. A resident(s) of the greater Warrensburg area, or a student(s) or faculty at the University of Central Missouri
3. A Warrensburg group or business with a primary focus on music, or proposing to host a musical event
4. Not a current Artistic Opportunity Grant recipient.
5. Have not received an Artistic Opportunity Grant during the current fiscal year

Grant Categories (2):

1. Professional and Artistic Development:

Musical artists and groups may apply for funding for short-term opportunities that will significantly advance their work or careers, such as, but not limited to, study with a significant instructor available for a limited time, or participation in a competition, residency or exchange program. An individual or collaboration may request up to 80% of the cost of the opportunity with requests not to exceed $500.00.

The project should result in some kind of public presentation that is open to the public in Warrensburg (even if it also results in a public presentation elsewhere).

2. Presentation Opportunities:

Presenters of musical artists or groups may apply for funding for short-term opportunities that will significantly advance the availability of musical events in Warrensburg such as, but not limited to, artist fees, materials to complete work committed to a performance, promotional/advertising materials for the performance, instruments, space for a specific performance and/or other related expenses. An individual or collaboration may request up to 80% of the cost of the opportunity with requests not to exceed $500.00.

Priority will be given to those events in which a performer or group has not appeared in Warrensburg within the year previous to the scheduled event.

The project should result in some kind of public presentation that is open to the public in Warrensburg (even if it also results in a public presentation elsewhere).

Evaluation Criteria for Artistic Opportunity Grants

Applications are evaluated on the following criteria as applicable to the category selected.
• Anticipated impact on the artist’s work or career or impact on the mission and goals of the organization or group (20 points)
• Relationship and suitability of the project to the artistic goals and philosophy of Friends of Music (15 points)
• Proposer’s financial feasibility, collaboration and additional support as well as demonstrated need as documented in the submitted budget (20 points)
• Ability to carry out the project (15 points)
• Proposer’s plans for showcasing the results and the impact on the Warrensburg community (20 points)
• Immediacy and uniqueness of the opportunity (10 points)

What we will not fund
- Student projects that are part of a course assignment (college or pre-college)
- Projects that are of a for-profit/commercial variety in which proceeds are not
returned to or available to the FOM in some way

General Procedures

1. Application and Timeline
    a. Obtain a current version of the application guidelines. This may be obtained from any FOM Board Member, from the office at the UCM   
        Department of Music, or from the FOM website (see links below).

    b. Applications should be submitted via email at any time during the year. Applications MUST be submitted at least 45 days prior to the
        actual event. No more than one Friends of Music Artistic Opportunity Grant application will be funded per applicant, per fiscal year.

    c. Projects should begin within three months of approval

2. Content of the Application

Materials must be submitted in the following order
    a. A short and concise introductory statement describing the project
    b. A complete budget for the project that shows projected expenses and income,
        highlighting how the Artistic Opportunity Grant funding will be used. Include the amount requested from Friends of Music, and, as 
        applicable, anticipated donation amounts, earned income (as from ticket sales), and applicant’s contributions to the project.

    c. A complete description of the project
    d. A description of how the project will impact the applicant/applicant’s group and how the Warrensburg community will benefit from the
        project.

    e. A description of marketing plans to attract a Warrensburg audience.
    f. Supplemental materials (if available):
        § Copies of marketing/publicity/informational materials with pertinent
        § information about the event.
        § Copy of current resume/vita or press packet, if applicable.

3. Review Process
    a. No funding is guaranteed by Friends of Music without approval of the application by members of the FOM Board of Directors
    b. The Board of Directors will review applications as a part of their regular agenda at regularly scheduled meetings or on an emergency basis if the need arises.

4. Notification and Usage of Award
    a. Applicants will be notified in writing (electronically), or by telephone, of the decision of the Board within one week of the decision. 
        Awardees will receive full payment following notification of the decision.

    b. Funding from a Friends of Music Artistic Opportunity Grant MUST be used for the purpose for which it was intended or the said amount
        should be returned to the Board immediately along with the final evaluation report.

    c. Acknowledgement of the support of the Friends of Music must be made in all promotional materials, programs, and announced at any
        public presentations.


5. Event Evaluation Report
    a. An Event Evaluation Report is due within 60 days of the end date of the project. Failure to submit this report may preclude future
        funding from Friends of Music.

    b. This report should include a detailed breakdown of the budget, as well as an estimate of the size and nature of the audience at the
        public presentation/concert.
