UCM welcomes Amy Hearting back to the percussion faculty. Ms. Hearting, Principal Percussion with the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, will instruct percussion majors/minors both fall 2013 and spring 2014, as well conducting the UCM Percussion Ensemble.
Mike McBain serves as the UCM Marching Mules Drumline Coordinator. Mike earned his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Northwest Missouri State University, and Master of Arts in Percussion Performance from the UCM. Mike is also the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Percussion at Lee's Summit High School. Prior to joining the staff at Lee's Summit, McBain spent 4 years as Assistant Director of Bands/Percussion Instructor at Raytown High School and Raytown Middle School. Before coming to Raytown, he was Director of Bands for the South Hold R-I School District in Oregon, Missouri.
He has studied percussion with Danny Watring, Alfred Sergel III, Kevin Bobo, Doug Auwarter, Todd Strait, and Dr. Michael Sekelsky. Mike is on the Vic Firth Education Team as a Percussion Educator and a Marching Percussion Specialist. He is a battery tech for the Missouri "Sounds of Summer" drumline camps sponsored by Yamaha and was a member of the KC Chiefs "Rumble" Drumline during the 2009 season. Mike and his wife Leticia live in Lee's Summit and are the proud parents of their daughter Lauren.
Mat Thornton, 2013 UCM percussion graduate with a B.A. degree in music joins the percussion staff as Assistant Drumline Coordinator. For the past two summers, Mat has been featured at Worlds of Fun in the "Grease Monkeys" show. His experience with drumline includes working with several high school in the area such as Fort Osage, Raytown, Clinton, and Lees Summit.
Joing the percussion faculty for select private lessons, is Dr. Sean Darby. Dr. Darby's primary adjunct teaching area at UCM is within the Music Technology program. Sean recently completed his DMA in percussion at the University of Illinois where he studied with William Moersch. Prior to that, Sean was a teaching assistant at the University of Tennessee where he completed his masters degree. Sean's undergraduate degree is from UCM.
