UCM WIND ENSEMBLE PERFORMS AT STATE CONVENTIONMMEA Logo

The University of Central Missouri Wind Ensemble was honored to have been selected as a featured performing ensemble at the Missouri Music Educators Association Convention at Tan-Tar-A in January, 2008!

The UCM Wind Ensemble was one of two university bands invited to perform at the state convention and were proud to represent our university at this important venue. The program included Be Glad Then, America, by William Schuman, Fugue in C, by Charles Ives (arr. Sinclair), Porta Nigra, by Scott Boerma (conducted by Dr. David Stagg, Associate Director of Bands), and the fourth movement of Shadow Catcher, by Eric Ewazen (featuring the UCM Faculty Brass Quintet).

Director of Bands

Thank you for your interest in the concert bands at the University of Central Missouri. We are very proud of all that we have to offer. Whether for music majors, minors, or students enrolled in one of the many other courses of study at UCM, we promise a comprehensive and fulfilling performance experience at the very highest level. The Wind Ensemble (Listed as "Symphonic Wind Ensemble" in the undergraduate handbook and course bulletins) is the premier concert band at UCM, and is made up of the university's most accomplished wind and percussion players selected by audition at the beginning of the term. The Wind Ensemble performs two concerts each semester in UCM's Hendricks Hall Auditorium and is also an important part of the university's commencement exercises at the end of each term. In addition, this ensemble also frequently tours throughout the region and has been featured at the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference, as well as at regional and national conferences. The Central Missouri University Wind Ensemble is actively involved in the commissioning and premieres of new works for wind band, and performs the best recent music for winds, as well as some of the concert bands most important core repertoire. The Wind Ensemble premiered two new works during the 2006-2007 academic year. First, as part of a commissioning consortium, was "The Waters of Speech Are Silent," by Joanne Metcalf, and second was the premiere of a major new work for band, entitled, "Spirit!" by composer Aldo Rafael Forte. 2008 premieres will include works by composers Mark Camphouse, Craig Weston, and Shelley Hanson.

The Symphonic Band, directed by Dr. David Stagg, Associate Director of Bands, is open to all UCM Students. The Symphonic Band begins its fall semester rehearsals at the conclusion of the regular football season in preparation for the Fall Bands Concert, and meets throughout the spring semester. They perform core literature for the concert band, as well as some of the best new works by contemporary wind band composers. Students are encouraged to enroll for Symphonic Band for the spring semester. Those who are not in the marching band who are interested in the fall Symphonic Band should please contact Dr. Stagg.
